Zhu Rongji’s reforms highlighted after former premier’s death

The former premier’s push for WTO entry and state-sector restructuring during his tenure remains a reference point for current US-China economic competition.

Hong Kong-based SCMP Economy highlights how the death of former Chinese premier Zhu Rongji has prompted renewed attention to the reforms tied to his time in office, including efforts that helped reshape China’s state sector and market opening.

The outlet points to a key milestone in April 1999, when Zhu helped drive China’s push toward joining the World Trade Organization, framing it as more than a diplomatic event and as a step that underpinned broader economic change.

SCMP Economy also notes that Zhu was involved in an overhaul of state-owned enterprises and a willingness to draw on foreign management ideas, including through work connected to China’s economic planning and enterprise reform efforts dating back to the early reform era.

In recent years, the outlet adds that Zhu’s historic trip to Washington has been revisited by American lawmakers, think tanks, and officials as strategic rivalry between the United States and China has intensified across economic and business areas.
