China completes milestone test on US$10.8 billion canal link

China has completed a milestone test on a major canal megaproject designed to connect a large inland region with Southeast Asia, advancing the effort toward its next phase of delivery.
According to SCMP Economy, the authorities carried out the first full transits along a 134.2 km, 83.4-mile canal linking the inland area to Southeast Asia, a step intended to support smoother trade.
The outlet said the project, valued at US$10.8 billion, is now in final stages of preparation with a planned September launch.
SCMP Economy framed the move as part of efforts to facilitate commerce with a key bloc of trading partners.
