DHL Express expands Shenzhen air cargo super gateway, tripling capacity
The $204 million terminal expansion at Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport raises capacity to 992 tons per day, with annual throughput expected to exceed 286,000 tons at full operations.
Yahoo Finance reports DHL Express has completed a $204 million expansion of its Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport “super gateway” that triples its shipping capacity.
The project is designed to handle much larger volumes of e-commerce and general cargo, increasing throughput to 992 tons per day. At full capacity, DHL expects annual throughput to exceed 286,000 tons, about 10 times the volume handled by the previous Shenzhen gateway.
The larger facility, which began construction in 2022, is heavily automated, with high-speed sorting, automated storage, robotic arms, and automated guided vehicles to unload, store, handle, inspect, and monitor parcels and larger shipments.
DHL also introduced a new dedicated air route using a Boeing 767 cargo jet linking Shanghai with Bangkok, Bahrain, and Brussels, aiming to meet demand for air cargo transport between China and key markets across Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.
