Drone strike triggers fire at Russia’s Ust-Luga export terminal

The blaze at Ust-Luga comes after Ukraine stepped up drone attacks on Russian energy infrastructure, a campaign that has already disrupted fuel exports and prompted Russia to import some fuels.

Ust-Luga, a key Russian port on the Baltic Sea used for exporting crude oil and other commodities, caught fire early Friday after an overnight drone attack from Ukraine, according to OilPrice.

The governor of Russia’s Leningrad region, Alexander Drozdenko, said the fire was detected due to drone damage and that firefighters were working to extinguish it, with operations ongoing.

OilPrice noted the terminal is important for Russia’s crude oil and fuel shipments, as well as exports including coal, fertilizers, and grain. The outlet added that it was not the first attack on Ust-Luga, with a prior strike reported in early July.

This year, Ukraine has intensified drone strikes on Russian energy infrastructure, including attacks on refineries, Russia-linked tankers, and supply routes, with the aim of cutting energy export revenues and fuel supply to front lines, OilPrice said. The outlet also cited previous impacts such as Moscow curbing fuel exports and Russia reportedly importing some gasoline from India, while diesel and gasoil exports have reportedly fallen in the first seven months.
