China’s EVs add entertainment features like karaoke and VR cockpits

A dealer in Shanghai said intelligent features are drawing demand from young drivers, as China’s brands compete on tech beyond batteries and autonomy.

China’s electric vehicle lineup is expanding from advanced batteries and driving assistance to onboard entertainment and “intelligent” features, including voice-activated AI assistants, headlights that can function as film projectors, and karaoke systems, according to a report from SCMP Economy. The same wave of Chinese-developed EVs also points to immersive digital cockpits, with some models integrating virtual reality technology into the driving environment. The goal, the report says, is to broaden the definition of smart cars by turning vehicles into entertainment centers. SCMP Economy cites Zhao Zhen, a sales director at Shanghai-based dealer Wan Zhuo Auto, saying intelligent features are helping propel sales due to young Chinese drivers’ willingness to adopt new technologies. The story also notes that China’s push to build more autonomous, intelligent EVs has helped local brands stand out versus global competitors, citing consultancy AlixPartners.
