Hong Kong business groups urge Northern Metropolis and AI push in 5-year plan
Submissions for the first five-year blueprint, due to be published in September, total more than 16,000 and align with China’s 2026 to 2030 plan.
Hong Kong’s major business chambers have called on the government’s first five-year plan to prioritize the Northern Metropolis mega development, strengthen the city’s role as an international financial centre, and accelerate its artificial intelligence strategy, according to SCMP Economy.
In their recommendations submitted ahead of a public consultation that closed on Friday, groups including the American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong and the Federation of Hong Kong Industries cited the Northern Metropolis as a key economic driver.
The Northern Metropolis, first announced in 2021, is intended to transform about 30,000 hectares of land along the mainland Chinese border into a growth engine, a housing hub, and a university town.
The blueprint is expected to be published in September and is set to run from 2026 to 2030 in line with China’s 15th five-year plan. FHKI said the development should be guided by industrial development, enterprise presence, and employment outcomes, while AmCham asked for a single statutory entity to streamline coordination and for deeper Greater Bay Area wealth integration through expanding Wealth Management Connect quotas and broadening eligible product scopes.
