Magnitude 7.7 quake hits Indonesia's Flores region, tsunami alert lifted

A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck off the coast of Indonesia early Saturday, hitting the Flores region and causing building collapses and panic in an area that has a history of deadly quakes, according to SCMP Economy.

Authorities issued a tsunami warning after the quake but later lifted it after Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency said monitoring found no significant sea level changes that would threaten coastal communities.

The US Geological Survey said the quake occurred at 5.58am local time, with a depth of 10km, and that its epicenter was located 68km north-northwest of Ende in East Nusa Tenggara province.

Local officials reported at least two deaths and two injuries, and footage from local television showed hospital staff evacuating patients and moving equipment outdoors as temporary treatment areas were set up while aftershocks followed the initial quake.
