China researchers break a key sensitivity versus noise trade-off for sensors
The work was published in Physical Review Letters on July 17, targeting quieter magnetic signals that have limited everyday sensor performance.
Chinese scientists say they have made a “decisive step” toward enabling magnetic sensors to detect very faint signals, overcoming a longstanding sensitivity versus noise trade-off, according to SCMP Economy.
The outlet described a scenario where a smartwatch could vibrate to an alert if a magnetic anomaly suggests a submarine passing about 500 metres below, framing the advance as progress toward more sensitive magnetic sensing.
SCMP Economy said the findings were published on July 17 in Physical Review Letters, describing how shrinking sensors and improving sensitivity previously came with a punishing increase in noise, analogous to amplifying radio hiss when turning up volume.
The researchers’ reported advance aims to help everyday magnetic devices “hear” quieter signals that have been difficult to detect with existing sensor designs.
