China sentences developer to 20 years in organised-crime case
The higher court ordered a retrial after finding evidence was insufficient to treat the case as gang-related.
South China Morning Post reports that Chinese authorities sentenced real estate developer Zeng Jianbin in Mianyang, Sichuan province, to 20 years in prison after prosecutors charged him as a “gang leader” during a crackdown on organised crime.
According to SCMP Economy, the Mianyang Intermediate People’s Court convicted Zeng in 2023 of nine offences, including provoking trouble, illegal lending at high interest, and intentional destruction of property, with the court saying the sentence reflected the organised nature of the alleged crimes.
The outlet also said the higher court sent the case back for a retrial in May, concluding there was not enough evidence to justify treating the matter as gang-related.
