FCC reportedly weighs ban on Chinese AI optical transceivers

The South China Morning Post reports the US Federal Communications Commission is reportedly considering a ban on Chinese optical transceivers, a step that would extend US China technology restrictions beyond semiconductors into other parts of the AI hardware stack.

Optical transceivers are described as small fiber optic devices that send and receive data using light, with major use in quickly transmitting large volumes of information across AI data centers and cloud networks.

According to the report, Washington’s concerns focus on data theft, potential service disruptions, and long term dependence on Chinese suppliers, with officials aiming to remove Chinese “plumbing” from the AI ecosystem before it becomes costly or difficult to unwind.

The article also flags practical constraints, noting that US suppliers such as Coherent and Lumentum may not match Chinese firms on scale, and sudden substitution could be difficult given the need for frequent repair or replacement and hardware compatibility limits, which could leave large hyperscalers facing disrupted optical module supplies.
