Hong Kong sports sector added HK$46b in value in 2024
The value-added figure covered spending across sports-adjacent areas including facilities, manufacturing, retail, tourism, and supporting initiatives, according to Hong Kong’s Census and Statistics Department.
Hong Kong’s sports sector generated an additional HK$46 billion, or about US$5.9 billion, in value for the local economy in 2024, a year that also included the territory’s best Olympic performance in history, South China Morning Post reports.
The Hong Kong Census and Statistics Department released an analysis of the contributions of sports and related activities in 2024, including the operation of sports facilities, manufacturing and retail linked to the sector, and tourism and supporting initiatives.
The sports industry and adjacent sectors produced HK$46 billion in value added at basic prices, defined as total sales revenue at base prices minus the cost of raw materials and supplies, before the government applies taxes or subsidies to the final price.
The report also noted that Hong Kong athletes won two gold medals and two bronze medals at the Olympics in 2024.
