Food and beverage tenants increasingly anchor Metro Atlanta mixed-use projects
An ICSC study cited by Bisnow says food and beverage retailers are taking 20% or more of retail space, and Toro’s Johns Creek project plans to expand its retail footprint with a 20,000 square foot phase.
Food and beverage businesses are increasingly being prioritized as anchors for mixed-use development projects in Metro Atlanta, according to a panel of experts speaking at Bisnow’s Atlanta Mixed-Use Summit.
Toro Development Co. said it has focused on leasing retail space to restaurants and other F&B vendors first for its The Medley project in Johns Creek, before pursuing soft-goods service tenants.
Bisnow cited an ICSC study estimating that food and beverage retailers account for 20% or more of retail space and pointed to CoStar data showing consumers spent more than $100 billion on restaurants and coffee shops as of summer 2025, a more than 50% jump since the start of the pandemic.
For The Medley, Toro captured multiple F&B tenants including Shake Shack, Fadó Irish Pub, and Summit Coffee, and earlier this year announced a second phase called Encore that would add 20,000 square feet to the 125,000 square foot retail component, bringing in The Nest Cafe and CT Cantina & Taqueria among the new signings.
