Hong Kong population rises 0.3% as births fall below 30,000

Midyear population reached 7,518,300, up 0.3% year over year, while births dropped 15.6% to 29,700 between mid-2025 and mid-2026.

Hong Kong’s population increased slightly to 7,518,300 by mid-2026, rising 0.3% year over year, according to provisional data released by the Census and Statistics Department.

The numbers also show a sharp demographic shift, with births totaling 29,700 between mid-2025 and mid-2026, down 15.6% from 35,200 a year earlier, the first time births fell below 30,000 on record.

The Hong Kong government attributed the modest population gain to measures it said supported talent attraction and labour importation, which it said helped offset a natural decline in the population.
