Trump approval sinks to 33% as war with Iran raises oil worries

The Reuters/Ipsos poll found 64% disapproved of Trump’s performance, as the Iran conflict has disrupted about a fifth of the global oil trade and pushed up petrol prices.

Trump’s approval rating fell to 33%, the lowest level of his presidency, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll that concluded on Monday. In a four-day survey, 64% of respondents disapproved of his performance in the White House, down from 35% in an earlier poll that closed this month.

The poll results reflect widespread concern among Americans that the US war with Iran will last a long time. Reuters reports the rating has tied the lowest point from Trump’s first term, reached in December 2017.

Reuters also links the political hit to market and economic fallout from the conflict. The ensuing fight has paralyzed a fifth of the global oil trade, Reuters reports, contributing to a surge in petrol prices that is weighing on US households and on Trump’s Republican allies ahead of November midterm elections.

Trump previously campaigned on keeping inflation in check and avoiding long-lasting wars. Reuters says he had pledged the Iran conflict would take only a few weeks and argued it was necessary to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon that could threaten the world.
