American Airlines to restore seatback TV screens on domestic flights
The carrier will also add more premium seats, with full seatback-display installation expected by early in the next decade.
American Airlines says it will bring back seatback TV screens across its domestic fleet, reversing the long-running move to remove built-in displays from most US routes. The company says the change is part of a broader cabin investment announced this week.
The airline previously removed seatback screens from aircraft used on domestic service, starting in 2017, and argued that passengers often preferred streaming on personal devices. American Airlines said that approach reduced weight and maintenance costs, but it also drew complaints about drained batteries, awkward viewing angles, and patchy onboard Wi-Fi.
The new plan also includes adding more premium seats, aimed at improving the travel experience and boosting revenue. The decision comes amid competitive pressure as analysts note rivals such as Delta and United have invested in onboard entertainment, and JetBlue has retained seatback TVs.
American Airlines expects to roll out the new displays as quickly as possible, with full installation targeted for early next decade. Its reversal signals an effort to align onboard amenities with passenger expectations as technology improves, including lighter hardware and lower power use, according to BBC Business.
