Uber and Zipline partner to launch autonomous drone delivery for Uber Eats
The companies target 1 million drone deliveries per day by the end of 2029, starting in Zipline markets and expanding to dozens of cities.
Uber Technologies and Zipline announced a partnership to bring autonomous drone delivery to Uber Eats customers across the United States, with first deliveries planned to begin later this year, according to Reuters.
The tie-up includes Uber making a strategic investment in Zipline, though Uber declined Reuters' request for financial details of the investment.
The rollout will start in Zipline's existing U.S. markets before expanding to dozens of additional cities. The companies said they aim to reach 1 million drone deliveries per day by the end of 2029.
Reuters also noted that Zipline has made 2 million deliveries to date and was most recently valued at $7.6 billion after raising $800 million earlier this year. The deal is similar to Uber's partnership with drone firm Flytrex last year, which also included an investment, and Zipline has commercial partners including Walmart and more than a dozen restaurant brands such as Panera, Chipotle, and Wendy's.
