OCC chief targets final GENIUS payment stablecoin rules by November
The comptroller expects the OCC to start processing stablecoin issuer applications in 2027, using input gathered after its February 376 page proposal.
The US Comptroller of the Currency, Jonathan Gould, said the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency plans to publish final rules implementing the GENIUS Act for payment stablecoins by November, after collecting industry feedback on a February proposal.
Cointelegraph reports the OCC released a 376 page proposal in February, and Gould said the agency will issue finalized guidance ahead of the law’s scheduled January 2027 enactment date.
The GENIUS Act, signed into law in July 2025, is intended to create a US regulatory framework for payment stablecoins and requires rulemaking by multiple agencies, including the OCC, the Treasury Department, the FDIC, and the Federal Reserve Board.
Cointelegraph adds that regulators have until Jan. 18 to finalize regulations as the law goes into effect, and Gould said the OCC could begin processing stablecoin issuer applications starting in 2027.
