China expands oil and gas while leading renewables rollout
China reported record crude output of 216 million metric tonnes in 2025, and natural gas output rose by 10 billion cubic metres last year, supported by efforts to cut energy import dependence.
China is ramping up both renewable and fossil fuel capacity, with a faster rollout of solar, wind, and battery storage alongside policies that have increased domestic oil and gas output, according to OilPrice.
The outlet cites National Energy Administration data showing China’s crude output hit a record 216 million metric tonnes in 2025. It also reports that China’s natural gas output increased by 10 billion cubic metres last year.
OilPrice adds that Chinese oil and gas firms expanded reserves, adding 1.32 billion metric tonnes of oil equivalent in recoverable volumes. The article also notes that between January and July this year, China’s crude output rose 0.9% to 4.42 million bpd, based on National Bureau of Statistics data.
The piece links the higher oil and gas production to government efforts to reduce reliance on energy imports, including filling strategic oil reserves with discounted Russian and Iranian crude in recent years. It frames the strategy as aimed at improving energy self-sufficiency and security over the coming decade.
