South Korea eyes APEC summit to boost ties with China

Foreign Minister Wang Yi said China and South Korea should accelerate talks on the second phase of their two-way free trade agreement.

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung said he plans to use the upcoming APEC leaders’ meeting in southern China to raise the level of South Korea-China cooperation, as Seoul and Beijing continue a diplomatic rapprochement.

In talks with visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi at South Korea’s presidential office, Lee said he looked forward to traveling to Shenzhen in November to attend the APEC summit and work toward upgrading the two countries’ strategic cooperative partnership, citing improved public perceptions of China in South Korea, according to SCMP Economy.

Wang told Lee that China’s policy toward South Korea is aligned with Seoul’s interests and urged maintaining a friendly approach, while also calling for greater progress around the next year’s fifth anniversary of diplomatic ties.

He added that, amid growing trade protectionism elsewhere, the two countries should accelerate the second phase of negotiations on their two-way free trade agreement, and his trip marked his first solo ministerial visit to Seoul since September 2021, SCMP Economy reported.
