North Korea fires short-range ballistic missiles after Trump-Kim remarks
Seoul said the launches came hours after Trump said he plans to meet Kim Jong-un later this year, while South Korea and the U.S. were scaling down their Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises.
North Korea fired several short-range ballistic missiles from the Pyongyang area, Seoul’s military said on Thursday, hours after US President Donald Trump told reporters that he planned to meet Kim Jong-un later this year, according to SCMP Economy.
Pyongyang has previously linked missile tests to US-South Korea joint drills, which it condemns as preparations for invasion, and the timing followed a shorter edition of the annual Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises.
Seoul’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said the North launched around 10 short-range ballistic missiles, while Japan earlier said a suspected North Korean ballistic missile had already fallen, based on a social media post from the prime minister’s office.
Trump’s renewed focus on Kim and his order to scale back joint military exercises have alarmed some Asian allies and also fueled speculation that the US leader is seeking a foreign policy breakthrough as the Iran conflict drags on, the report said.
