Wang Yi presses South Korea to keep ties with China and the US
China said Wang Yi linked regional stability to ending Washington’s hostile stance toward North Korea and restarting dialogue on the peninsula.
China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with South Korea’s national security adviser Wi Sung-lac in Seoul and urged South Korea to pursue “genuine strategic autonomy,” developing relations with Beijing and Washington at the same time rather than choosing sides in major-power rivalry, according to a statement from China’s foreign ministry.
The Chinese statement said Wang called on Seoul to refrain from “bloc confrontation” and to avoid mutual exclusion in its ties with major powers, citing the approach as a way to support parallel engagement with China and the US.
Wang also argued that lasting peace on the Korean peninsula can only be achieved by addressing the core causes of conflict and ending Washington’s hostile stance toward North Korea.
He added that China hopes parties will take concrete steps to restart dialogue and restore mutual trust, and said Beijing welcomes movement toward peaceful coexistence and a transition from an armistice mechanism to lasting peace.
