Gitxsan Huwilp withdraws support for Seabridge’s KSM gold mine
The decision follows a June 2026 B.C. Supreme Court ruling that the province failed to properly consult the TSKLH Nation over environmental risk to waterways.
Mining.com reports that the Gitxsan Huwilp government withdrew its support for Seabridge Gold’s KSM mine in northwestern British Columbia on Thursday.
The move comes after years of petitions and opposition, including TSKLH’s argument that it was not properly consulted about environmental risks tied to toxic waste and potential impacts to its traditional territory.
According to Mining.com, B.C.’s Supreme Court ruled in favor of the First Nation in June 2026, with Justice Emily Burke saying the province breached its constitutional duty to consult TSKLH.
Mining.com adds that KSM is located 65 km northwest of Stewart and is described by Seabridge as one of the world’s largest undeveloped gold projects, with a 2022 preliminary feasibility study estimating 47.3 million ounces of gold reserves and a $5.8 billion net present value.
