International feed makers train in Iowa to boost mill efficiency

The weeklong program at Iowa State University covered pelleting, cooling, testing for pellet durability, and grain storage quality, aiming to address hot and humid climate and equipment gaps that can degrade feed during storage.

World Grain reports that delegations from Colombia, Saudi Arabia, New Zealand and Panama took part in educational courses at Iowa State University focused on improving feed milling efficiency and storage quality.

The US Grains & BioProducts Council led the group, and USGBC manager of global strategies and trade Mark Sevier said the council works with customers to highlight US corn and co-products while helping overcome challenges such as on-site storage and processing operations.

The weeklong course combined classroom instruction with hands-on training at ISU’s Kent Feed Mill & Grain Science Complex, covering feed manufacturing and mill management topics including hammer and roller milling, particle size analysis, batching and mixing, steam generation and conditioning, pelleting and cooling, plus post-pelleting applications.

Participants also trained on mixer uniformity and on pelleting and pellet durability and hardness testing, and they received instruction on maintaining quality in stored grains, including distiller’s dried grains with solubles (DDGS). The group toured facilities including a POET ethanol plant in Iowa Falls to observe DDGS production.
