Mississippi River corn export inspections jump to 1.1 million tonnes

Inspections for the week ended Aug. 13 rose 176% versus the prior three-year average, with higher volumes also moving on the Mississippi River System.

US corn inspected for export from Mississippi River terminals surged to 1.1 million tonnes for the week ended Aug. 13, up 176% from the prior three-year average, according to the US Department of Agriculture’s Grain Transportation Report (GTR), as summarized by World Grain.

The report said the 1.1 million tonnes was an all-time high for that time period and the third-highest weekly corn export total from the Mississippi River this year. It also linked the increase to above-average corn volumes on the Mississippi River System (MRS).

Over the past four weeks, an average of 494,000 short tons of corn moved down the MRS, climbing 19% from the same week last year and 53% versus the three-year average.

World Grain also noted strength in other export regions, including Pacific Northwest inspections totaling 400,000 tonnes, up nearly 200% from average, and interior inspections of 300,000 tonnes, up 26%, largely tied to railed exports to Mexico.
