Teen drops remaining claims in social media addiction lawsuit
The case had been selected as a bellwether test scheduled for an October trial, and the platforms deny wrongdoing while other state lawsuits proceed.
A 15-year-old New Jersey plaintiff identified in California court records as P. M-Y. has dropped her remaining claims against Meta Platforms, Google, and Snap in a lawsuit accusing social media companies of deliberately addicting young people and fueling a mental health crisis, according to a court filing reported by Insurance Journal.
The teen had alleged that the platforms contributed to social media addiction, depression, and self-harm. Her attorney, Emily Jeffcott, said the dismissal was not tied to payment and reflected the plaintiff’s wish to resume her life.
The companies said she dismissed her claims without any payment. Meta is also defending itself at two other trials over claims from states that it designed its platforms to be addictive to children and misled the public about their safety.
Insurance Journal also noted that TikTok previously settled her claims. P. M-Y.’s case was one of three bellwether, or test, cases consolidated in California state court in Los Angeles and scheduled for October, a process attorneys use to gauge how juries may view similar claims and inform settlement discussions. Meanwhile, the separate state lawsuits are continuing, with one involving claims from 29 states in federal court in Oakland, California, and another involving Tennessee still ongoing in state court in Nashville.
