China bureaucracy at Shenzhen crossing proves smoother than Hong Kong myths
An op-ed in SCMP says paperwork and guidance for dog customs clearance at Shenzhen Bay were largely problem free once vaccinations and ownership were verified.
A recent op-ed in the South China Morning Post argues that perceptions of mainland China as rigid and superior are outdated, citing the author’s experience when moving two dogs from Hong Kong to Shenzhen.
The piece describes a smooth process at the Shenzhen Bay crossing, where officials were initially playful about the animals before clearing the dogs once the author showed that vaccinations were valid.
While the author says the Hong Kong Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department could be helpful, they portray it as seeming more rigid during the vet endorsement step.
The op-ed also criticizes what it calls lingering assumptions of superiority in Hong Kong, pointing to government investment in services and improvements across central and local levels, and adds that other applicants held contrasting views based on their own expectations.
