Iran warns countries against joining new US sanctions campaign
The warning comes as oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz are at a virtual standstill and the US is preparing fresh sanctions actions that Tehran says could deepen economic strain.
Iran condemned plans for new US sanctions, warning that countries that participate could be treated as enemies, according to Reuters citing comments from Mohsen Rezai, head of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, on state television.
The remarks were made amid continued tension following US and Israel air strikes on Iran on February 28, with Reuters noting that direct attacks have not resumed but neither side shows signs of pursuing peace talks.
Reuters said oil shipments are effectively halted in the Strait of Hormuz, with Tehran threatening action against any unauthorised oil tankers attempting to transit the waterway, while Iran’s economy remains under heavy pressure from existing sanctions.
The article also said US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is expected to hold a press conference on Monday after promising “the toughest sanctions in history” on Iran, and that China, which buys more than 80% of Iran’s shipped oil, has urged diplomacy, according to 2025 data from analytics firm Kpler.
