Berkshire more than doubles Macy's stake as turnaround gains traction
Macy's turnaround, launched in 2024, included closing 150 unproductive stores and boosting luxury-brand focus, with the company reporting its best comparable sales growth in four years in fiscal 2026 Q1.
Berkshire Hathaway has more than doubled its stake in Macy's, increasing the position in the second quarter, according to Yahoo Finance. The holding remains small within Berkshire's broader portfolio, valued at roughly $173 million at the end of the quarter and representing about 0.1% of its investments.
The same coverage points to Macy's turnaround strategy, branded as "A Bold New Chapter," which started in 2024 and includes three main elements. Macy's said it began by revamping its store footprint, closing 150 locations that were no longer productive and investing in about 350 stronger-performing stores.
The strategy also emphasizes growth in Macy's luxury brands, including Bloomingdale's and Bluemercury, through additions and remodels. A final pillar focuses on streamlining back-end operations, such as supply chain-related assets, and building a scalable technology platform.
Yahoo Finance adds that Macy's performance has shown signs of improvement, noting that in fiscal 2026 Q1 the retailer posted its best comparable sales growth in four years.
