Clearwater Underwriting hires Richard Hooks to launch Upstream Energy

Hooks, appointed managing director of Upstream Energy, will build the unit by combining technical underwriting expertise with Clearwater’s MGA model to grow the upstream portfolio.

Clearwater Underwriting, a specialty insurer focused on marine risks, has appointed Richard Hooks as managing director of its new Upstream Energy division, tasking him with overseeing the unit’s creation and growth.

According to Reinsurance News, Hooks will work on building a dedicated upstream energy offering for clients and brokers, with responsibilities including expanding the Upstream Energy portfolio by pairing technical underwriting expertise with the agility and responsiveness of the MGA model.

The division plans to provide brokers with a specialist alternative in a highly technical class, backed by Clearwater underwriting capabilities, technology, and capacity partnerships.

Hooks joins Clearwater after a 20 year tenure at Tokio Marine Kiln, most recently as departmental head of marine and energy, and will lead a push toward disciplined underwriting and long term portfolio quality, Clearwater said through its chief underwriting officer, Richard Young.
