Employees want AI benefits guidance, but trust lags employers’ plans

Prudential’s 2026 Benefits & Beyond study found 83% of US employers want to use AI for benefits guidance, while only 58% of employees say they would use it.

Prudential Group Insurance executives say the main barrier to workplace AI benefits guidance is trust, not technology, citing a gap between employer intentions and employee willingness. According to Insurance Business America, 83% of employers want to use artificial intelligence for benefits guidance, but only 58% of employees say they would actually use it.

Scott Roth, vice president and chief technology officer of Prudential Group Insurance, told Insurance Business America that employees are increasingly using AI in daily life for decisions tied to financial, health, and benefits, yet confidence has not caught up with adoption. Privacy and security are the leading concerns for workers, cited by 52% of employees, ahead of accuracy and reliability worries at 49%.

The Prudential 2026 Benefits & Beyond study surveyed 3,096 full-time US employees and 760 employers. While 78% of employers view AI positively, only about half of employees feel the same way, a 27-point gap, and just 24% of employees currently use AI for benefits guidance.

Roth also pointed to differences in adoption by workplace context, saying unionized employees are more likely to use AI for benefits guidance than salaried counterparts, 40% versus 27%. Among employers with concerns, 40% cite the risk of sharing employees’ personally identifiable information as their top worry, reinforcing the need for clearer protections and communication, Insurance Business America reported.
