Hong Kong airport opens revamped Terminal 2 for regional travelers
Terminal 2 has 15 airlines and is part of HKIA’s wider three-runway expansion that will lift capacity to 120 million passengers per year.
Hong Kong International Airport has opened its revamped Terminal 2, designed to serve passengers traveling to and from regional destinations, according to a report by SCMP Economy.
The update follows the airport’s 1998 opening of Terminal 1, and it builds on years of upgrades that have kept HKIA positioned as an international aviation hub. SCMP Economy also notes that the airport’s three-runway system began operations in November 2024 on time and within budget, and it is intended to expand capacity by 50 percent to 120 million passengers per year.
On the passenger-facing side, SCMP Economy reports that Terminal 2 is welcoming 15 airlines. The terminal includes amenities such as 24-hour dining and retail outlets, along with features aimed at improving the flow and feel of the space, including five vehicle lanes under an entrance canopy, waterfall displays, and a cantilever roof.
The outlet quotes an Airport Authority Hong Kong executive director of engineering and technical services, Tommy Leung King-yin, describing Terminal 1’s award record after 30 years and saying that Terminal 2’s “feather-shaped” roof was developed through multiple design revisions, using a canopy-style structure supported by inclined, tapering “tree columns.”
