John Lee touts Hong Kong as a gateway for mainland and global start-ups
Lee said more than 11,000 mainland and overseas firms and over 5,200 start-ups were operating in Hong Kong as of last year, and the city has incubated 20 unicorns over the past decade.
Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu urged scientists, leading enterprises, and investment institutions worldwide to seize opportunities in the city, calling it a “golden gateway” for overseas firms entering mainland China and for mainland unicorns expanding globally, according to the SCMP Economy.
Speaking at the first Global Unicorn Summit, Lee said Hong Kong’s advantages include a world leading capital market, a common law system, a low tax business environment, a global trade network, and a pool of top tier international professional talent. He described the city as a “superconnector and super value adder” between the mainland and the world.
Lee also pointed to Greater Bay Area development as a way to combine Hong Kong’s talent and research strengths with mainland cities advanced manufacturing capabilities, aiming to support innovation and technology growth.
He cited scale figures for Hong Kong’s startup and company footprint, saying a record high of more than 11,000 mainland and overseas companies and over 5,200 start-ups were operating in the city as of last year, and that Hong Kong has incubated 20 unicorns over the past decade.
