NYC plans $4B BQE rehabilitation with bypasses starting in 2030
The project is estimated to take 10 years and the city says delaying it for each year adds about $160 million in costs.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced that the New York City Department of Transportation will pursue a rehabilitation of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway’s deteriorating cantilever section along Brooklyn Heights, rather than replacing the highway.
The plan calls for two-level and second elevated bypasses to keep local access to attractions during construction, including a two-level bypass above Furman Street from Atlantic Avenue to Columbia Heights and a second elevated bypass from Columbia Heights to the Manhattan Bridge, with the project expected to start in 2030.
According to the administration, the estimated $4 billion effort could take 10 years, and it estimates the renovation would extend the life of the BQE for another 40 years.
Commercial Observer reports that DOT Commissioner Mike Flynn said the city must act to improve safety and minimize traffic diversions into Brooklyn neighborhoods, while the announcement also said each year of procrastination increases costs by an estimated $160 million.
