Treasury launches review of England and Wales business rates for pubs and hotels
The review is led by business rates expert Jerry Schurder and is set to report in March 2027, feeding into the next 2029 rates revaluation.
A new review has been launched into how business rates are calculated for pubs and hotels in England and Wales, with the UK Treasury saying the process could result in reforms to the system.
The Treasury appointed business rates expert Jerry Schurder to lead the review, which is expected to report back in March 2027. The government is seeking input from landlords, hoteliers, and business owners, and the findings are intended to feed into the next business rates revaluation in 2029.
The BBC Business said the review comes after a prior policy move that includes a 20% cut in business rates for pubs, social clubs, and live music venues in England, taking effect in April.
The article also notes that the British Beer and Pub Association cites the closure of 161 pubs in the first three months of this year across England, Scotland, and Wales, equating to about 2,400 jobs lost, and points to valuation methods that can increase rates bills as turnover rises.
