Bitcoin climbs toward $81,000 as 50-week trendline becomes the test
Bitcoin has gained about 25% in a week to near $80,000, but analysts say a weekly close above the 50-week moving average around $81,087 would be a clearer bear-market signal.
CoinDesk reports that Bitcoin surged about 25% in a week, pushing toward $80,000 on Aug. 25, 2026. Despite the rally, the newsletter highlights one remaining technical level bulls typically need to clear to validate the end of a bear market.
The key barrier is the simple moving average over the past 50 weeks, currently around $81,087. CoinDesk cites Galaxy Research saying that reclaiming the 50-week moving average during completed bear markets has historically aligned with the bear-market low being in, with the bear-market low noted around the $82,000 area.
CoinDesk also points out that price has already moved through the major moving averages on the daily timeframe, including the 50-, 100-, and 200-period averages. Dan Tapiero, founder of 50T Funds, described the move as an “extreme momentous break up” in BTC and complex, and he added that the cycle low is already in.
Still, the newsletter flags that the pace of the run may be stretched. It notes the seven-day rate of change is near 25%, a level CoinDesk says is rare and has often been followed by pullbacks or consolidation rather than an immediate continuation higher.
