Kernel locks in financing for Ukraine wind farm as energy buildout expands

The 94.5 MW project will add battery energy storage to help smooth output during peak hours, alongside Kernel’s earlier solar installations.

Kernel Holding SA has secured €100 million in financing from Denmark’s Export and Investment Fund (EIFO) to support construction of its first wind power project in central Ukraine, according to World Grain. The company said the wind farm is expected to bolster energy independence for its production assets while adding clean generation capacity to Ukraine’s power system amid the ongoing war with Russia.

The 94.5 MW wind project will be built with 21 wind turbines supplied and installed by Vestas, and Kernel said it will also include industrial battery energy storage systems to help balance power output during peak hours. Kernel framed the move as part of its strategic priorities, alongside core grain operations, and said it aims to strengthen energy security and operational resilience.

Kernel added that renewable energy development includes related capacity upgrades beyond wind, including solar panel installations at its elevators and a 106 megawatt solar power plant in southern Ukraine. In remarks cited by World Grain, Kernel CEO Yevgen Osypov said stable energy supply for the company’s assets supports fulfillment of international contracts.

World Grain also reported that the wind farm’s preparation included an international environmental and social risk assessment aligned with global best practices. Kernel characterized the effort as a step toward decentralizing Ukraine’s power system to improve resilience to wartime security risks, and EIFO funding was provided under its dedicated program for investments in Ukraine.
