Mainland engineers could help Hong Kong firms scale up operations
A HKUST research institute director said a startup needing 500 engineers can assemble a team quickly on the mainland but faces difficulty in Hong Kong.
Industry leaders say Hong Kong companies can bridge a local engineering talent shortage by tapping a larger pool of engineers on the mainland, according to SCMP Economy. The remarks were shared during a six-day media tour of the Greater Bay Area organized by the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office.
SCMP Economy said the tour included stops such as the Guangzhou HKUST Fok Ying Tung Research Institute in Nansha, a cargo facility and a university in Dongguan. The institute, described as the first HKUST research institute established on the mainland, focuses on innovative research, product and process development, and commercialisation.
SCMP Economy quoted the institute’s general director, Gao Min, highlighting that the shortage of engineering talent in Hong Kong can limit large scale technology expansion despite reserved land for innovation and technology in the Northern Metropolis.
Gao also cited a practical example, saying a startup needing 500 engineers could quickly assemble a team on the mainland, while doing so in Hong Kong remains difficult.
