Turner Construction says hackers accessed data in July breach

Turner confirmed the attack on Aug. 18, and letters to more than 13,000 potentially affected individuals say leaked records may include Social Security, bank and passport numbers.

Turner Construction disclosed that it experienced a data breach that lasted between July 2 and July 15, with hackers claiming they accessed information tied to military projects, nondisclosure agreements and personal data, according to Bisnow.

The company said it confirmed the cyberattack on Aug. 18 and notified more than 13,000 potentially affected people, based on attorneys general disclosures in four states. In those letters, Turner said the exposed information includes Social Security numbers, bank account information and passport numbers, while it did not state whether any government secrets were obtained.

A ransomware group called Payout Kings claimed responsibility and said it had taken 27.2 terabytes of data from Turner. The group said the compromised material includes engineering documents with employee personal data, military project files, legal and litigation records, correspondence, financial records, contracts, NDAs and other agreements, with some information reportedly restricted under International Traffic in Arms Regulations.

Turner said it has hired third-party cybersecurity and forensic experts and is conducting a detailed review. The company is offering credit monitoring for five years to those impacted. Bisnow also reported that the breach disclosures identified affected residents numbering 6,098 in California, 3,683 in Texas, 3,643 in Massachusetts, and 38 in Vermont.
