USAA appoints Lieutenant General David F. Melcher as board chair

Melcher succeeds James M. Zortman, who has served on USAA’s board since 2013 and as chairman since 2021.

USAA has appointed Lieutenant General David F. Melcher, U.S. Army (Retired), as Chairman of its Board of Directors, according to Reinsurance News. The move follows a planned leadership transition and names Melcher as the successor to James M. Zortman, Vice Admiral, U.S. Navy (Retired).

Zortman concludes his chair tenure after serving on the USAA board since 2013 and as chairman since 2021, and he remains a longtime USAA member. USAA also noted that he helped strengthen the company’s financial and operational foundation while navigating what it described as a rapidly changing insurance and financial services environment.

USAA President and CEO Juan C. Andrade said the change marks an important moment for the company, thanking Zortman for his leadership and commitment to members. Andrade added that Melcher was the right leader to build on the company’s progress.

Reinsurance News also reported that Melcher has spent nearly seven years on the USAA board, most recently as Vice Chairman, helping oversee strategy and shape direction. The article said Melcher served more than three decades in the U.S. Army and later held senior private sector leadership roles, along with board leadership experience across defense, aerospace, and health care industries.
