BeiDou is used in about 90% of key industry applications in China
China’s industry ministry said a 2024 pilot helped 39 cities add 2.96 million BeiDou stand-alone positioning terminals in the first half of 2026, about 30% more than a year earlier.
China’s homegrown BeiDou satellite navigation system has been adopted in about 90% of “key industry” applications nationwide, according to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, as reported by SCMP Economy.
The ministry said it is promoting large scale BeiDou use through a pilot programme launched in 2024. It did not specify which sectors qualify as “key industries.”
For the first half of 2026, SCMP Economy reported the ministry said 39 cities in the pilot programme added 2.96 million BeiDou stand-alone positioning terminals, up about 30% from the same period last year.
The ministry also cited specific local areas that reached 100% BeiDou adoption, including shared bicycles, taxis, government vehicles and agricultural machinery. By the first half of 2026, it said the 39 pilot cities had deployed more than 12 million BeiDou-enabled stand-alone positioning terminals, with over 7.2 million in consumer uses, more than 4.6 million in industrial manufacturing, and over 1 million in integrated innovation.
