BLM schedules October oil and gas lease sale for 3,388 acres
The Bureau of Land Management will offer 20 parcels in an online auction on October 27, after a public protest period that runs through September 24.
The Bureau of Land Management will hold an online oil and gas lease sale on October 27, offering 20 parcels totaling 3,388 acres of public mineral estate for development in Montana and the Dakotas, OilPrice reports.
BLM said it completed scoping for the parcels in May and closed a public comment period on the acreage and related environmental analysis in July. A 30-day public protest period opened Monday and runs through September 24, giving parties another chance to challenge individual parcels before the October sale.
Under federal oil and gas leasing rules, winning companies gain the right to pursue development but must still submit applications for permits to drill. Those applications require proposed development plans and undergo additional BLM review, environmental analysis, and a further public review process, while BLM also said the leases will include stipulations intended to protect natural resources.
The October auction will be conducted online through Efficient Markets, and parcel information, maps, and protest instructions are available through BLM’s ePlanning system.
