Massachusetts biopharma jobs fall 3.1% in 2025 while funding rebounds

Massachusetts biopharma raised $3.45 billion in venture capital in H1 2026, up 25% year over year.

Massachusetts’ biopharma industry logged its first annual employment decline in more than two decades in 2025, with jobs falling 3.1% to 113,503, according to MassBio, as cited by ConnectCRE.

At the same time, MassBio’s 2026 Industry Snapshot found that venture capital, initial public offerings, and M&A activity returned to momentum in the first half of 2026.

Massachusetts-headquartered biopharma companies raised $3.45 billion in venture capital in H1 2026, up 25% year over year, and the report said it was the strongest opening half since 2023. The state accounted for 25% of all U.S. biopharma venture capital in the period, ranking second to California at 43.4%.

The snapshot also pointed to an IPO and deal pickup, with eight Massachusetts companies going public in the first half of 2026 and 11 Massachusetts companies acquired for a reported $18.0 billion, versus $7.6 billion disclosed in the year-ago period, ConnectCRE reported.
