South Asian students increasingly prefer local undergrad before studying abroad

A SCMP Economy survey found 53.0% of South Asian respondents now prefer staying in their home countries for undergraduate study before pursuing postgraduate degrees abroad.

For years, many South Asian students, especially from India, viewed an overseas undergraduate degree as the usual path to an international career. SCMP Economy says that assumption is shifting, with more students recalibrating their plans rather than abandoning global ambitions.

According to the outlet, the new approach is to start undergraduate study at home or within Asia, then pursue postgraduate study abroad afterward.

SCMP Economy cites a report in which 53.0% of South Asian respondents said they prefer remaining in their home countries for undergraduate studies before moving overseas for postgraduate degrees.
