SpaceX to build $100 billion Starbase launch facility in Louisiana
The project is expected to start next year on a 125,000-acre site and support thousands of Starship flights per year, with the first launch from Louisiana targeted for 2029.
SpaceX plans to construct what it says will be its largest launch site yet in Louisiana, a $100 billion project called Starbase, with construction set to begin next year. The facility will expand the company’s operations beyond its current Texas headquarters and sites in Florida, according to BBC Business.
SpaceX says the site will be used to support thousands of Starship flights each year, with missions launching to Earth orbit, the Moon, Mars and beyond. The company also expects its first Starship flight from the Louisiana base in 2029.
The launch facility is projected to create more than 3,000 jobs for the region, and Louisiana Economic Development says the average wage for base workers would be 192% higher than the region’s current average salary. The agency described the project as establishing Louisiana as a global hub for next-generation aerospace and expanding launch capacity and infrastructure.
SpaceX’s announcement arrives after the company’s June debut on Nasdaq, following what BBC Business called the world’s biggest stock market launch. The outlet also notes SpaceX shares have fallen more than 30% from their early trading highs but remain above the $135 offer price as investors weigh profitability concerns alongside expansion plans.
