Bitcoin Core merged a txindex redesign that cuts optional index size

The update reduces a rebuilt txindex from about 66 GB to 26 GB, but operators must recreate the database to capture the full savings and a later downgrade would require another rebuild.

Bitcoin Core has merged a redesign of its optional transaction index, -txindex, that trimmed the index size by about 40 GB in one mainnet test, according to CryptoSlate. The change, merged into Bitcoin Core's master branch on Aug. 15 via pull request #35531, reduced the author's rebuilt mainnet txindex from roughly 66 GB to 26 GB, a reduction of about 61.0%. CryptoSlate notes the saving is confined to this optional index, while the broader blockchain and other data directory contents were not part of the measurement. The article says existing -txindex databases remain readable through an upgrade, so the redesign does not force an immediate rebuild. However, operators will need to recreate the txindex to realize the full space reduction, and the cost can return again if they later downgrade. CryptoSlate adds that the new lookup key format uses a shorter key derived from a salted SipHash, with Bitcoin Core still performing full transaction ID verification to avoid false matches. In the author's test, transaction lookups stayed around 0.2 milliseconds, and rebuilding the mainnet txindex took 1 hour 19 minutes versus 1 hour 50 minutes under the prior format.
