MSIG USA underwriting chief promoted to global MS&AD role

MSIG USA filled Botkin's job a week earlier by naming Carrie Brodzinski chief underwriting officer from The Hartford.

MSIG USA said Brian Botkin, its chief underwriting officer, has been promoted to international chief underwriting officer at parent MS&AD Insurance Group, expanding his mandate from the US to the insurer’s global operations. In the new role, Botkin will help lead underwriting strategy, governance, and portfolio management across MS&AD’s international businesses, according to Insurance Business.

The update also points to a coordinated succession plan. MSIG USA named Carrie Brodzinski as chief underwriting officer one week before Botkin’s promotion, hiring her from The Hartford, where she led Global Specialty underwriting as chief underwriting officer since 2021, with prior senior roles at AXA XL and AIG.

Botkin joined MSIG USA in 2024 after more than three decades at AIG, most recently serving as deputy chief underwriting officer for international financial lines, where he managed a portfolio spanning more than 40 countries. Insurance Business also said his work at MSIG USA included building an enterprise underwriting strategy aimed at more consistency, discipline, and data-driven portfolio insight.

MSIG USA CEO Peter McKenna credited Botkin with the company’s underwriting transformation, noting that MSIG USA’s gross written premium tripled over three years to nearly $2 billion. MS&AD group chief global officer Hironori Morimoto said Botkin’s US specialty underwriting experience will help connect underwriting expertise and best practices across MS&AD’s businesses to improve global risk evaluation and management.
