Core Scientific buys Polaris DS for about $444 million to expand power

The acquisition adds roughly 440 megawatts of grid-connected capacity in Oklahoma, supporting a plan to grow its Muskogee campus to 1.5 gigawatts of gross power.

Core Scientific, Inc. is expanding its power business for AI data centers through a cash acquisition of Polaris DS for roughly $444 million, according to Yahoo Finance.

The deal, completed on August 14, 2026, is expected to add about 440 megawatts of grid-connected power capacity in Oklahoma, as Core Scientific looks to expand its Muskogee campus to 1.5 gigawatts of gross power.

Core Scientific said the acquisition is part of a broader strategy to build out its power portfolio, noting it has added more than 600 megawatts of leasable power through site acquisitions during 2026. The company is already contracted to deliver about 82 megawatts at Muskogee to a customer starting in the second half of 2027.

As Core Scientific repurposes former bitcoin-mining sites into AI hosting capacity, it also referenced its July agreement with AMD, which provides AMD access to more than 500 megawatts of AI-ready data center capacity starting in 2027 and expandable to 2.5 gigawatts, with warrants issued to purchase Core Scientific stock. The outlet also noted that Core Scientific has not disclosed financing terms for the acquisition.

Competition for power and data center capacity has intensified as chipmakers like AMD and Nvidia sign megawatt-scale arrangements with multiple providers, raising uncertainty about how quickly newly added capacity will be fully utilized.
