Inditex opens first UK Lefties robot-assisted outlet in Liverpool

The first store will be followed by locations at Lakeside in Essex and the Metrocentre near Newcastle this year.

Guardian Business reports that Inditex, the owner of Zara, has opened the first UK Lefties store in Liverpool, marking the start of a small expansion of the cut-price chain.

The outlet uses automation to reduce staffing costs, including self-checkouts that scan whole baskets and a hanger-sorting system that sends hangers via a hidden conveyor belt to robots that sort items into boxes by size.

The Liverpool store also features fitting rooms with a hatch that sends unwanted items to be sorted behind the scenes by robots, with garment-sorting equipment splitting items into rails for different departments.

Guardian Business says the company plans two more Lefties locations this year, at Lakeside shopping centre in Essex and at the Metrocentre near Newcastle, with additional openings expected next year after reviewing how the first stores perform.
