StarkWare transaction labeled quantum-safe gets confirmed on Bitcoin mainnet

The spend was included in block 964,199 on Aug. 26 using a 10,000-satoshi input and paid a 5,179-satoshi fee, though the onchain record does not independently verify the quantum-attack claims.

StarkWare said a Bitcoin transaction built using its Quantum Safe Bitcoin, or QSB, design was mined on mainnet without changing Bitcoin consensus rules, with the specific transaction confirmed in block 964,199 on Aug. 26, according to The Defiant.

Blockstream’s onchain record cited by The Defiant shows the transaction used inputs totaling 49,179 satoshis, created a single 44,000-satoshi output, and paid a 5,179-satoshi fee. The spend was 1,403 bytes, and StarkWare also said the related funding transaction that contained the 10,000-satoshi output was confirmed on July 16.

The Defiant reports that while the onchain record confirms the transaction was included in a block, it does not independently establish the construction’s claimed resistance to quantum attacks. The article adds that QSB’s implementation uses Bitcoin’s legacy scripting rules rather than requiring a soft fork, and that the method’s security is described as relying on hash-based puzzles and RIPEMD-160 preimage resistance instead of elliptic-curve hardness.

StarkWare also cautioned, per The Defiant, that QSB does not make all of Bitcoin quantum-safe. The protection applies only after coins are moved into the special output, and it would not help coins tied to public keys already exposed before the protective transaction was sent; the transaction was also nonstandard and required a direct path to a miner.
