Typhoon Saudel disrupts flights and ferry routes in eastern China
Ningbo Lishe International Airport suspended flights from 11:30pm Thursday, and after reopening at 11am Friday, some 16 inbound and 28 outbound flights were cancelled for the day.
Typhoon Saudel hit China’s eastern Zhejiang province, disrupting air and ferry services across major cities that include the industrial hub of Ningbo and the economic centre of Shanghai, according to SCMP Economy. Ningbo Lishe International Airport suspended all flight operations from 11:30pm on Thursday, and while services resumed at 11am on Friday, the airport cancelled 16 inbound and 28 outbound flights for that day.
The disruption also extended to Wenzhou, where SCMP Economy reported that 197 flights were grounded on Friday. In Shanghai, the Shanghai Passenger Ferry Company said ferry routes were suspended from 9am on Friday, except for the Changxing-Hengsha river crossing.
Major airlines, including Air China and China Southern Airlines, offered passengers free rebooking or full refunds for travel to and from affected hubs, covering trips between Thursday and Saturday, the outlet added. SCMP Economy also cited China’s National Meteorological Centre, saying the typhoon made landfall in Yuhuan in Taizhou around 8am on Friday with winds up to 126km/h near its centre.
SCMP Economy reported that the typhoon then moved briefly out to sea before making a second landfall in Wenzhou around 9:10am. A red typhoon warning remained in place, the highest level in China’s four-tier system.
